If he's not legally entitled to it then you might be able to get some back. Otherwise the government should leave him alone. Yes it's not popular. Yes it's moraly questionable. However these threats of expropriation make the government look little better than Zanu-PF and Robert Mugabe and if Godwin's any sense he's had the money moved out of the country where Gordon can't get his gruby hands on it.

"And it might be enforceable in a court of law, this contract, but it is not enforceable in the court of public opinion and that is where the government steps in."

This is absolutely outrageous and a major violation of the basic principles of law. Fortunately there is no way this will survive contact with the Human Rights Act/ECHR. She's talking total cock and I'm really surprised she was allowed to do so.

Oh I think she was perfectly allowed to do so. I don't think that it would have taken long for the government lawyers to come to the conclusion that they can't actually do anything about it. So by having Harriet promise hellfire and retribution the government can at least give the impression that they share public concerns even though they actually seem to have approved the deal. Therebye deflecting criticism of their complicity in the matter and creating a nice scapegoat in the form of Godwin. Harriet is merely the leader of the commons so isn't actually that important in the administration of government so makes a nice vehicle for this kind of thing.
