Its just impossible - call at 8.30 they say, so you do, just to get through 10 mins later and there are no appointments. Try to prebook and you have to justify why you should be allowed to (and then wait 2.5 weeks). If you work its harder than ever to get to make an appointment (via the services your taxes fund). Its so frustrating. Call again at half 3, is the request, but there wont be anything left then either. Think I'll write a letter, might be easier!

Top tips from having sickly child:

1. Phone again, say NHS Direct told you to see your GP and tell them you are happy to go in and wait.
2. Try again tomorrow by actually going to the surgery at stupid o clock and queuing outside. People at the desk always beat those on the phone.

Obv both inconvenient and use up a lot of day.

I agree the system sucks.

Turning up at our doctor at 08:30 does work, however you can end up waiting inside quite some time.

Last time I did this, I was standing talking to the woman at reception and she was answering the phone as well. I had to actually say something along the lines of, "Excuse me, I am here and waiting. I shall be extremely disappointed if you prioritise appointments to a phone call that has interupted our conversation."

That really bugs me though when people do that, interupt a conversation because they don't want to miss a phone call. If it's important, guess what? They'll call back!

I checked my mobile after I made the last appointment - 26 phonecalls in about 8 minutes to finally get through and the only appointment left was a cancellation. It's a nightmare system

I second the NHS Direct idea, sometimes it's the only way

I always try calling well before 8.30. There's usually staff about from about 8.20, minaly so they can deal with the calls.

Yep, the system sucks, and depending on you're surgery don't bother going to the desk to get an appointment, tried that once and they told me to call the surgery on the phone!
G figure.
